Someone actually suggested to me that a woman could be cherished in the year 2006.

There seems to be some confusion here. You see, the male definition of "cherish" describes a woman resembling Cher. Sort of a cross between cheesy and whorish. You know, rhinestones, tattoos, fake boobies and a penchant for swearing. Cherish women can often be spotted oogling Precious Moments displays or blown glass unicorns.
I damned near had an eye put out by a Thomas Kinkade umbrella this morning. Armageddon will happen in a WV trailer park. I am certain of it.
